> This is something I’ve done out of habit for years simply because I don’t want > to go flying forward if I happened to knock into gear!

Agreed! In fact, I once rammed a "huge" jeep into a cute (now defunct) Matiz when I turned on the ignition in first gear!

"In a manual car, you need to depress the *clutch* in order to start the car."

I don't quite see what is dangerous about turning right on red. Also, it looks like you got your relationship with pedestrians completely backwards! Since they cross on green, turning on red automatically deconflicts cars and pedestrians. In fact, in many places in San Francisco you can ONLY turn on red, because pedestrians go so thick that you cannot turn on green.

I always use my signals. I drove through DC that way and nothing bad happened. Of course, Boston is a cesspit of humanity, so perhaps it has something to do with it.

Parking brake is useful on a hill, it's just that you don't have any real hills around Westford. Didn't you drive through San Francisco though? Try to turn from NB 46th avenue right into Geary without the hand brake. But yes, it's not used for much. Some cars come with a parking brake pedal (GM loves that setup for some reason).

In automatic, making people to step on a brake prevents someone hitting the lever and unparking the car. On my RAV4 with gated shifter it would be easy to do.

They make you to step on the clutch to start in order to prevent driving on a starter. You can easily bypass that switch if it bothers you.
